Mainly caught in winter (from April to September) around southern New Zealand and the Chatham Islands. They're also found in the Marlborough Sounds and Cook Strait

Blue cod is managed by Fisheries New Zealand using the Quota Management System (QMS) and is caught by longline and fish pots, which are some of the most sustainable fishing methods. The total allowable catch for the year ending September 2022 is 1,892 tonnes.
